CLEVELAND — Anyone driving around town probably has a car that looks something like this. Covered in snow and road slat. And that salt is known for causing rust, but not so much in these temps.

“In this temperature, the salt is caked on with ice, and there’s not that much liquid water. There’s some corrosion going on, but it really speeds up in the spring when it melts and there’s water,” said Dante Centouri with the Great Lakes Science Center.

“When it starts warming up and all that snow and ice melts, all that salt gets in those nooks and crannies. Wheel wells, cross members, undercarriage.”

That’s when you head over to a full service auto service like carnegie auto wash. Keyword full service. Here they do more than just the surfaces you see, they hit the undercarriage as well to make sure your car’s frame lasts as long as possible. Plus they take special care to make sure your car doesn’t freeze after.

But even with a fresh wash and dry, there’s a good chance you’ll have something on your car by the time you get home.

Centouri added, “There’s almost nothing you can do about it unless there’s a car wash in the garage.”
