NORTH RANDALL, Ohio — It’s been 37 years since we’ve seen a Triple Crown winner in thoroughbred horse racing.
Many believe that American Pharaoh will be the horse to end the drought at the Belmont Stakes Saturday, joining a short list of horses that have pulled it off.
Some analysts believe more than $200 million in wagers will be placed on the race, more money than total wagers placed on all races combined any other Saturday of the year.
At Thistledown Racino, live races happen everyday. Some people leave winners, others aren’t so lucky. Either way, a majority of those placing bets believe American Pharaoh is the go-to pick.
“I think American Pharaoh is going to win. I hope he wins,” said Marlene Romano. “As long as I win, I’m ok.”
NBC will be broadcasting the race. At 2:30 p.m. ET, pre-race coverage will begin on NBC Sports Network. Then, starting at 4:30 p.m., the actual race coverage will begin on NBC. Post time is 6:50 p.m.
A race for the triple crown also means a big day for local tracks. Last year, during California Chrome’s Triple Crown try, Thistledown had more than 20,000 guests come through the doors. This year, they’re expecting that number — plus more.
“They’re always big days for us. We have a lot of things going on at the property,” said Rick Skinner, general manager at Thistledown. “And, of course, our live racing post times start at 12:55 p.m. We’ll feature 9 live races.”
And the excitement surrounding the Belmont brings more excitement to the local races.
Warren added, “It’s great for people to be able to come back and embrace Thistledown and all of the fun and great activities we have here.”
While American Pharaoh’s Triple Crown run is good for horse racing as a whole, there are people out there who don’t think the 37-year drought will end just yet.
“It’s still a toss up,” said Kevin Bradley. “I’m gonna place about $20 on something. I’m hoping to take home at least $1,000. Just give me a thousand.”
