AKRON, Ohio — Akron has seen a virtual mayoral merry-go-round with three mayors holding office since the end of May. Tuesday, a primary election brings Akron one step closer to solidifying the position.
The Republican in the race, attorney Eddie Sipplin, is running unopposed. Two Democrats, Akron Councilman Mike Williams and Summit County Clerk of Courts Daniel Horrigan are vying for the post.
Unofficial election results posted by the Summit County Board of Elections have Horrigan ahead of Akron councilman Michael D. Williams by 2,715 votes — 57 percent of the vote — with all precincts reporting.
Long-time former Mayor Don Plusquellic announced he was resigning and retiring in May, in what many considered to be a surprise. Plusquellic, who was elected in 1987 had served almost 30 years when he stepped down.
Mayor Garry Moneypenny took office immediately after Plusquellic. However, he stepped down days later after allegations that Moneypenny went too far with a “goodbye hug.” The allegations stemmed from a female city hall staffer who was reportedly in Moneypenny’s office when it happened.
Former city council president Jeff Fusco took office soon after Moneypenny resigned. He’s held the post ever since. However, Fusco is not running in the mayoral election.
A Democrat has held the office of Mayor since at least 1984.
